Week one of NFL free agency was the definition of pure chaos.
The wildest moment of the week was when the Baltimore Ravens made a massive trade for Las Vegas Raiders star defensive end Maxx Crosby that ultimately fell through due to medical concerns.
But aside from the Crosby situation, many notable signings took place during week one of free agency.
Signings, such as wide receiver Mike Evans to the San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker III to the Kansas City Chiefs and defensive end Trey Hendrickson to the Ravens, took the league by storm.
In terms of the winners and losers of week one free agency, three teams in each category stand out.
Going back to the Raiders, they easily had the best week one of free agency and made a flurry of moves that shook the league.
Signing linebackers Nakobe Dean and Quay Walker, defensive end Kwity Paye, center Tyler Linderbaum and wide receiver Jalen Nailor capped off what was an outstanding week for a team trying to find its form again after a horrific 2025 season.
And given that the Crosby trade didn’t go through and he will remain a Raider, that defense is going to look dangerous.
The second winner is the New England Patriots, as they continue their efforts to build around young quarterback Drake Maye.
After a surprising Super Bowl appearance, the Patriots are looking to fix minor issues on both sides of the ball by signing wide receiver Romeo Doubs, offensive guard Alijah-Vera Tucker, defensive end Dre’Mont Jones and safety Kevin Byard III.
With these additions, the Patriots look poised to make another strong run at the Lombardi Trophy, likely with a much tougher schedule ahead.
The third winner is the Tennessee Titans, or “New York Titans,” given how many players the team signed who played for the New York Giants this past season.
The Titans signed former Giants’ cornerback Cordale Flott, wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson and tight end Daniel Bellinger.
While it’s easy to joke about the Titans signing three Giants players, these moves should help the team in a significant way.
Aside from the Flott signing, the Titans upgraded their defense by trading for defensive end Jermaine Johnson II, signing cornerback Alontae Taylor and defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers.
With defensive-minded coach Robert Saleh now leading the team, it’s no surprise the Titans are focusing on improving defense.
The losers of week one start with the Denver Broncos.
What did the Broncos do in week one of free agency? The answer is simple: almost nothing.
They re-signed running back J.K. Dobbins, but they were the only team in the NFL that did not sign an external free agent, according to the Denver Post.
Another team that did very little during week one is the Arizona Cardinals.
This is surprising, considering they had a poor 2025 season with an offense that struggled alongside a nonexistent defense.
They released quarterback Kyler Murray this offseason and did not pursue a replacement during week one of free agency.
Instead, they signed several backup players on both offense and defense for depth rather than targeting starting-caliber talent.
With a weak quarterback class in this year’s NFL draft, the Cardinals could be positioning themselves to land a top prospect next year.
For now, however, it’s a poor look for a team that needs help across the roster.
The final loser of week one is the Seattle Seahawks.
You may be thinking, “How are they free agency losers when they just won the Super Bowl?”
It starts with the team allowing its star running back to leave and join free agency after being named Super Bowl MVP.
It’s hard to justify letting Walker leave, especially to a team like the Chiefs, instead of paying him what he deserves.
Walker’s departure highlights a disappointing week for Seattle.
To make matters worse, their defense looks depleted compared to the unit that powered their Super Bowl run.
Linebacker Boye Mafe, safety Coby Bryant and cornerback Riq Woolen all signed elsewhere, leaving major gaps to fill.
Still, this is only week one of NFL free agency, and plenty of key players remain available.
With week two of NFL free agency now upon us, you can expect a flurry of moves in what should be another crazy week of NFL signings.
