San José State’s University Police Department evacuated and closed the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library for an investigation following a bomb threat on Thursday.
The library was evacuated around 1:30 p.m., leaving people outside and closing the library for the rest of the day.
Pedestrians were told to avoid the library and surrounding areas until further notice, while the rest of the SJSU campus remained open, according to an Alert SJSU notification.
UPD Captain Jermaine Thomas talked to the Spartan Daily on Thursday while the investigation was ongoing.
“On today’s date at 12:29 p.m., we received a call of a bomb threat that was targeted towards the MLK library on campus,” Thomas said. “Our officers, along with our library security officers, were respondents and were on scene, in which we quickly evacuated the building.”
An Alert SJSU message was sent university-wide around 2 p.m. to notify those associated with SJSU about the threat and the library’s closure.
Surrounding streets of the library were also closed, including South 4th Street from San Fernando to Santa Clara Street and 6th Street at San Fernando, according to the Alert SJSU message.
“We don’t know if it’s real or not, but we take all these calls that come in like this serious,” Thomas said.
Another Alert SJSU message was sent around 4:30 p.m. informing that the investigation had ended.
