The San José State men’s basketball team fell to Grand Canyon University, 94-79, on Saturday afternoon at the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
With the loss, the Spartans move to 6-19 overall and 1-13 in Mountain West play, while the Antelopes improve to 16-9 overall and 9-5 in conference.
The loss marked the Spartans’ eighth straight loss since their last win against Air Force on Jan. 13, 2026.
Last month, the Spartans and the Antelopes played a Mountain West Conference game at GCU, where SJSU lost 76-58.
Redshirt sophomore forward Adrian Myers gave the Spartans the first lead of the game with a 3-point shot.
In the first half, the Spartans built momentum and created a 10-point lead, putting them up 32-23.
The Spartans made six of their 12 3-point attempts in the first half.
Despite the Spartans’ lead, GCU went on to have a 13-point run late in the first half to regain the lead and momentum.
At halftime, SJSU trailed 39-36.
Tim Miles, head coach of the Spartans, said the team played well for most of the first half.
“I thought we came out and played mostly strong in the first half and did some really good things, especially on the offense, until the last four or five possessions,” Miles said.
GCU came out strong in the second half, going on another run and quickly extending its lead to 10.
The Antelopes made eight of their first nine shots in the opening three minutes of the half.
Miles said the team’s performance at the end of the first half set the tone for the second half.
“We were in a really good spot and then we didn’t play well in the half,” Miles said. “Oftentimes that leads to what’s going on in the second half.”
GCU held a 36-17 advantage on the boards and outscored SJSU 54-22 in the paint.
The Antelopes shot 62 percent from the field, while the Spartans shot 49 percent.
GCU senior guard Jaden Henley led his team with 24 points.
Miles said the lack of defensive effort and rebounds from the team made all the difference during the game.
“We couldn’t get a loose ball and then we couldn’t get a defensive stop and then we lost a little bit of willpower and that’s just too much to overcome,” Miles said. “You just can’t have that kind of defensive effort with loose basketballs, rebounding and everything inside and expect a win.”
Junior guard Colby Garland led SJSU with 23 points, knocking down three 3-pointers – his second-most in a game this season – while playing all 40 minutes.
SJSU had six players out because of injuries, including starting senior forward Yaphet Moundi and freshman guard Ben Roseborough, who both started earlier this season healthy.
Sophomore guard Jermaine Washington had missed the last three games.
Injuries have been a challenge for the Spartans all season, with several key players sidelined each game.
Garland, a star scorer for San José, dealt with an injury earlier this season when he had a concussion.
The Spartans will continue Mountain West play against the University of Nevada, Reno on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Provident Credit Union Event Center.
