On Wednesday, an armed carjacking suspect died after shooting a San José Police Department (SJPD) sergeant around 4 p.m. at West Julian Street and Highway 87, approximately one mile west of San José State.
Uncensored footage of the shooting on social media showed the adult male suspect attempting to take a police vehicle, then exiting the vehicle and running away before being hit by another police vehicle, according to a video posted by the Instagram account channel408_bayarea.
The footage also shows police firing multiple gunshots after the suspect was hit by the police vehicle.
Mai Phan, an employee of the café Dr.ink said he heard the incident unfold outside of the café.
“There was shooting right behind my car and then the whole police just started to SWAT down the whole parking lot and then blocked the whole freeway,” Phan said.
Several blocks surrounding the intersection were closed to the public because of the gunfire.
Phan said Dr.ink closed an hour early because of the police presence and surrounding streets being blocked off.
My car is still in the parking lot where they blocked the whole thing, I’m trying to ask right now if I can get my car back out,” Phan said.
The Spartan Daily requested a comment from multiple SJPD officers at the scene and they declined to comment.
The injured sergeant was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition, according to a San José Police Media Relations X (formerly Twitter) post.
San José Mayor Matt Mahan said he’s praying for a fast recovery for the officer in an X post.
“I had the opportunity to visit our officer soon after he arrived at the hospital,” Mahan said. “I told him and his family that my thoughts are with them and my prayers tonight will be for a full and fast recovery.”
