The San José State football team closed out its final road game of the season with a 25-3 loss to San Diego State on Saturday, finishing 0–6 on the road.
With the loss, the Spartans now stand 3-8 overall and 2-5 in Mountain West Conference (MWC) play, sitting second to last in the conference standings.
San Diego State improves to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in MWC play, remaining undefeated at home with one final road game left.
This also marked the first time all season the Spartans failed to score a touchdown.
San José State’s only points came on a 37-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Mathias Brown, who later missed from 39 yards.
Senior quarterback Walker Eget left the game with 2:43 remaining in the first quarter after suffering a leg injury.
Eget completed 4 of 8 passes for 32 yards and threw one interception before being replaced by freshman Tama Amisone.
Amisone finished with career highs in passing 104 yards and rushing 75 yards on 13 carries, but threw a fourth-quarter interception to senior cornerback Chris Johnson.
“Every day I just wake up grateful for the opportunity, and when I got the chance, I just wanted to go out there and play ball and have fun,” Amisone said.
Senior kicker Denis Lynch also missed a 43-yard attempt after slipping early in the first quarter.
Despite the loss, SJSU’s defense showed improvement under interim defensive coordinator Bojay Filimoeatu in his first game since Derrick Odum’s dismissal.
The Spartans allowed a total of 248 yards, and 25 points scored against them was the second fewest SJSU has allowed all season, behind only the 16–14 loss to Central Michigan in Week 1.
SJSU head coach Ken Niumatalolo praised his defense after the game.
“For Coach Bojay to step in and call the defense for the first time, I thought he did a really good job,” Niumatalolo said.
The defense also held Aztecs junior quarterback Jayden Denegal to just 81 passing yards, completing only 50% of his throws, tied for his lowest completion rate of the season.
Spartan senior linebacker Taniela Latu said the team focused on fundamentals.
“We just went back to the brand of football we should be playing, effort, getting to the ball, and physicality,” Latu said.
On offense, sophomore receiver Danny Scudero provided a bright spot, finishing with 12 catches for 79 yards, a season-high in receptions.
The game was a bounce-back performance for Scudero, who had been held under 45 receiving yards in each of the previous two games.
He now ranks second in the nation with 1,234 receiving yards, behind UConn’s Skyler Bell 1,278.
The Spartans will now return home for their season finale against Fresno State in the Battle for the Valley, which will be the final conference matchup between the programs as Fresno State moves to the Pac-12 next season. The game is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at CEFCU Stadium.
