It’s no secret that the United States of America is known for unhealthy eating habits, ultra-processed foods and obesity, and the lack of nutrition education Americans receive makes these matters worse.
Unfortunately, nutrition is not a topic that Americans receive much education about in their early years.
Students in the United States receive less than eight hours of nutrition education per year, according to a July 22, 2024 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Along with this severe lack of education, the percentage of schools requiring education on nutrition topics dwindled from 84.6% in 2000 to 74.1% in 2014, according to the same report.
As a nutrition major in college, I think my knowledge of nutrition is far from lacking. However, I do not feel as though I received an adequate amount of education on nutrition throughout elementary school to high school.
Unfortunately, I am far from alone. In a 2019 survey of 1000 people, one third of participants said they did not learn about nutrition in school in the first place, according to the Del Monte Foods Inc. 2020 State of Healthy Eating in America report.
Nutrition education is something that is being forgotten in many schools around the country, but should be emphasized in the education system along with other subjects.
In a survey conducted by MDVIP, 85% of Americans said that they know how to eat healthy, but 56% failed a basic nutrition quiz, according to its website. In the same quiz, only about 13% received a C grade or higher.
Nutrition education isn’t just failing in grade school either, it is also quite common for health professionals to be undereducated about nutrition.
Contrary to popular belief, medical doctors are oftentimes not the best source of information about nutrition and diet. That honor goes to registered dietitians and scientists who study dietetics.
A survey of medical students in the United States showed that only 7.8% of fourth and fifth year medical students said they had received 20 or more hours of nutrition education, according to a survey published in the Journal of Wellness.
Although doctors may not be the definitive experts in nutrition, they should certainly receive education on it.
This is especially true when one considers that the leading causes of death in the United States are directly related to diet, according to a Sept. 30, 2024 blog post from the University of North Dakota.
Nutrition education is especially important right now because there are so many different issues surrounding the topic of nutrition and diet.
Almost half of Americans are using social media, AI generation and unaccredited sources as a means of learning about diet, according to a Jan. 26 press release from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Not all information on the internet is inherently wrong or ill intentioned, but with the world we live in, it is extremely easy to spread misinformation.
The education system has failed us all, but now it is time for us to fix it. Nutrition education and other health subjects should be one of the things we start with.
