Students gathered for a relaxing morning of mind and body exercise at the Yoga and Boba event on Tuesday in the Provident Credit Union Center.
Three separate 45-minute yoga sessions took place in a lightly dimmed room with EDM music playing to entertain attendees.
Helena Chan, a second-year hospitality management student and one of the event organizers, said she wanted to give students a welcoming space during finals.
“We wanted to have an event … for the students to escape from their finals and studying,” Chan said. “So we thought of yoga for that, and then we always like to incorporate some sort of food, so I thought of something that rhymed with yoga and we thought of boba.”
Yoga mats were set up around the room for students to use during the session, with purple LED lights helping to create a calm environment.
Chan said when planning the event, she found Kate McCoy, a yoga teacher, online and chose her because of her enthusiastic, rave-like culture.
Kate McCoy runs Breath and Bass, an EDM-themed yoga pop-up and community event, according to the Breathe and Bass Instagram post.
“We found this yoga instructor, she’s really cool, she does EDM yoga events and I really love raving so I wanted to incorporate all these things, so that’s basically what inspired me,” Chan said.
During the sessions, a mix of EDM music played while McCoy led the class in different yoga poses including child’s pose, cat cow pose, butterfly pose and more.
Each session ended with a relaxing cooldown which consisted of tapping sounds and vibrations from a crystal singing bowl.
Yoga is a physically and mentally beneficial activity that can help people improve their strength, sleep, stress management and more, according to the John Hopkins Medicine webpage.
Students had the chance to participate in events like this this semester in different departments on campus.
The SJSU garden in March hosted yoga in the garden to give students the space to stretch and rest, according to the San José State garden webpage.
Sasha Selvan, a first-year business management information systems student, said the vibe of this event was different from other yoga events she’s attended.
“I actually really liked the music and it kinda kept me up, which was nice rather than regular yoga music,” Selvan said.
At the end of the event, students could choose from a selection of boba tea the Student Union provided from Break Time Tea.
Flavors varied with classic milk tea with boba, passion fruit tea with mango stars and mango green tea being available.
Alyssa Cheng, a first-year international business student, said she likes when the school has events that offer free things.
“The boba was a good incentive for me to actually go out and try yoga,” Cheng said. “I think in general, it helps just having something else to look forward to besides academics.”
The Student Union will host its next event, “Walking Chips,” in the Provident Credit Union Center on Wednesday, according to an April 28 Student Union Instagram post.
