The adult animated superhero series “Invincible” concluded its fourth season, delivering a successful, action-packed and emotional storyline.
The show premiered its first season in March 2021 on Amazon Prime Video, based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and illustrated by Ryan Ottley and Cory Walker.
The season follows Mark Grayson, voiced by Steven Yeun, joining a war against the Viltrumites with his half-brother Oliver, voiced by Christian Convery, and the Coalition of Planets while reuniting with his father Nolan Grayson, voiced by J.K. Simmons.
The Viltrumites are an alien race who have super strength and speed, living up to thousands of years and are in pursuit of expanding their army and conquering other planets.
Significant challenges put Earth at risk and leave Mark with difficult moral decisions.
The season also introduced a new main antagonist, the leader of the Viltrumites Grand Regent Thragg, voiced by Lee Pace.
This season’s episodes accurately retell significant events in the comics, bringing events to life better through animation than illustration.
The comics lacked the well-told backstories of characters like Nolan and Thragg on their home planet Viltrum.
Audiences are able to better understand the perspective of villains because of these changes.
It offers an understanding of character motives and why Viltrum is so violent.
Besides better telling of background information, the show included new and unnecessary subplots that distract from the main story, such as the episode “Hurm.”
The season did an outstanding job on character development for Mark and Nolan among others.
Mark is forced to deal with mentally tolling experiences that affect his morals in combat while Nolan tries to make amends with his family for his actions shown in the first season.
Mark’s mental health is greatly affected during the fourth season, experiencing anxiety and hallucinations of Thragg.
Debbie Grayson, voiced by Sandra Oh, who is Mark’s mother, moved on from Nolan who she was married to when he left Earth and started a relationship with her co-worker Paul, which would later end.
Meanwhile Mark’s superhero girlfriend Eve Wilkins, voiced by Gillian Jacobs, has been experiencing changes on her own when Mark leaves to fight in the war.
Besides changes to the story, the voice acting is incredible.
Oh remains as a strong voice actor for Debbie, with her line delivery being exceptional during the confrontation scene with Nolan in the episode “Give Us a Moment.”
Debbie’s dialogue clearly emits the pain she endured from Nolan’s actions thanks to Oh’s performance.
Yeun and Simmons also provide stellar performances, showing the emotions of their characters.
Despite how well most of the characters are casted, Thragg’s voice actor isn’t quite as fitting.
Pace’s voice does not match the appearance of the character, while lines come off as soft and needing improvement.
Thragg is consistently told to be a ruthless intimidating character, so with a less deep voice it doesn’t match his demeanor.
Despite my satisfaction, some of the animation is laughable at times. It stands out on more significant scenes, but some of the fights were not as fluid.
The movements of the characters sometimes looked like PNG’s and it is awfully noticeable. It is inconsistent in enhancing scenes due to the minimal use of color grading and shading.
Compared to the first season, the colors were brighter while this season does not add that flare.
A part of the noticeable animation changes is because the show switched to a different studio after the first season and Wind Sun Sky Entertainment served as the main animation studio then, according to Wind Sun Sky Entertainment.
The reported animation budget for this season was $2.5 million per episode, according to a March 29 Instagram post.
Even though this season had some flaws, it’s a cinematic experience that meets expectations in terms of animation, voice acting and story telling.
The fifth season is scheduled to be released sometime in early 2027, according to an April 22 Yahoo article.
