The San José State women’s tennis team’s continued effort fell short to Boise State University, 4-0 at the Spartan Tennis Complex on Thursday.

The Broncos held control of all the matches but one doubles set, while several Spartans had strong performances in their singles and doubles losses.

The doubles team of freshman Camila Celis and sophomore Katarina Brajovic led the team as the only winning Spartans in doubles, finishing with a 5-3 lead.

The Celis and Brajovic doubles team has had a winning season so far, with a 5-4 overall record, according to season statistics.

Despite Celis and Brajovic’s lead, Boise State took the point for doubles, beating the Spartan teams of junior Duru Durgun with sophomore Cristina Losada, 6-2, and sophomore Soledad Capilla with sophomore Emma Fantousis, 6-1.

As Boise State continued to score, the Spartans struggled to keep up.

During singles, the Broncos kept their lead with three straight-set victories to secure the match victory.

Durgun had a strong performance, with her first set against Boise State’s junior Zdena Safarova being neck and neck, leading to a tie breaker where the Broncos’ Safarova secured the final point. 

The second match between the two was left unfinished.

With three singles match victories, Boise State secured its win. 

The first team to collect four points in a dual match, one point in doubles and three in singles, wins and the remaining matches are ended, according to college tennis rules by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

SJSU head coach Chad Skorupka commended Durgun’s perseverance throughout her singles match.

“She was battling a very good player and had a set point at 6-5, coming up a little short, but I liked seeing her battle all the way to the end,” Skorupka said.

Durgun has had a history of success with the program, compiling a 53-28 combined doubles and singles record over her first two seasons from 2023 to 2025.

Losada also played strong in Thursday’s loss while not playing doubles.

She defeated Boise State freshman Carla Grignac in the first two sets, 6-3,5-2. 

The final game was unfinished.

The Spartan women’s tennis team’s season record now stands at 7-11.

The team still has three Mountain West Conference games until the tournament, taking place from April 22 through April 25.

Skorupka said the team will put the loss behind them and prepare for the tournament.

“When I talked to them after the match, I said we’re done with this match. We’re turning the page,” Skorupka said.

The Boise State women’s tennis team is a high ranked competitor, both during their season 14-3 and Mountain West conference games, 6-1.

The Spartan women’s tennis team played another match after facing Boise State, losing to Utah State University in a closer match, 4-3.

SJSU is still searching for its first conference win, as it is 0-8 in conference play this year.

The Spartans’ next match will be Friday at 10 a.m. against the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, at the Frank and Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nevada.
