The San José State football team looks to earn its first road win of the season.
The Spartans (2-3, 1-0 MWC) are scheduled to play Wyoming (2-3, 0-1 MWC) for their second Mountain West Conference (MWC) matchup this Saturday.
The team is coming off a 35-28 victory over the University of New Mexico.
SJSU defeated Wyoming 24-14 in last year’s meeting and has won six of the last seven matchups against the Cowboys dating back to 2013.
Wyoming is still searching for its first MWC win of the season.
Spartans head coach Ken Niumatalolo praised the Cowboys, acknowledging it’ll be a hard-fought game.
“They’re going to be a well-coached football team. We had our hands full last year against them, so we expect the same,” Niumatalolo said.
The Spartans appear to have the edge at quarterback as senior Walker Eget is ninth in the nation in passing yards with 1,521, according to the NCAA football statistics webpage.
He has also thrown for nine touchdowns and just three interceptions.
The Cowboys are led by sophomore quarterback Kaden Anderson, who has thrown for six touchdowns, three interceptions and 965 total yards this season.
SJSU’s receiving corps looks to continue their hot streak, led by sophomore Danny Scudero, who currently leads the nation in receiving yards with 665.
This success is nothing new for the Spartans.
Last season, former receiver Nick Nash was a triple crown winner as he led the Mountain West in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns–and the team seems to have found his replacement.
Spartans offensive coordinator Craig Stutzmann praised Scudero for his importance to the team’s offense.
“He brings speed, explosiveness, he loosens the box up, he gets safeties to play high over the top. What it does is it opens up a lot of guys around him,” Stutzmann said. “He’s out there early, we gotta tell him to relax and slow down a little bit, but at the same time, though, he’s not a vocal leader, he exemplifies playing with passion.”
Along with Scudero, fellow transfer receiver Leland Smith is looking to build off his last game, where he tied his season high with six receptions and scored his second touchdown of the season.
“It’s a receiver group and just a room full of unselfish guys, obviously we all love to make plays but we get the same satisfaction, if not more satisfaction from seeing one another make plays,” Smith said. “Just a great brotherhood that we have within the room.”
The Cowboys have had the edge in the rushing game, totaling 743 yards compared to the Spartans’ 562.
However, the Spartans will be without senior running back Floyd Chalk IV, as Coach Niumatalolo announced Tuesday during the weekly press conference that Chalk is scheduled to redshirt.
“I don’t have anything bad to say about Chalk, he gave us two good years and I’m grateful for him, he’s a great kid,” Niumatalolo said. “But it’s just the day and age now, the way we do things with the portal redshirting, guys make decisions which is best for them.”
Sophomore running back Lamar Radcliffe and freshman Steve Chavez-Soto, who made his debut last week with 71 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, and now leads the Spartans’ rushing attack.
It presents a good opportunity for the run game to maintain its momentum, as the Cowboys have allowed 899 rushing yards this season. The Spartans are averaging 23.2 points per game, while the Cowboys average 16.8.
However, SJSU has scored over 25 points in three straight games, making it possible to do so again.
On the defensive side, the Spartans are coming off one of their best performances of the season, recording a season-high three interceptions.
However, Wyoming is 5 for 9 on fourth-down conversions this year, and the Spartans’ defense has struggled in that area, giving up a total of 12 conversions.
SJSU’s defensive coordinator, Derrick Odum, is confident the defense can adjust and rise to the challenge on fourth downs.
“Fourth and inches are sometimes though to keep a guy from getting that, its try to get off the field as fast as we can, that’s always the point that were trying to do on defense,” Odum said.
SJSU is scheduled to face Wyoming on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium.
