Kyane Schmidt, a San Jose State freshman defensive lineman, returned home after spending several months in a coma due to a car accident on May 20.
His mother, Audrey Hutton, posted on Schmidt’s CaringBridge website that his doctors described Schmidt’s progress as “fantastic,” and in just a few weeks of regaining consciousness, he returned home July 30.
According to the post, his current state is described as “in recovery.” The severity of his injuries caused memory loss, blurred vision, double vision and balance issues.
Despite this, Hutton stated that she remains confident Schmidt will fully recover.
“As he was emerging from the coma and using words that were uncommon in his vocabulary, now his usual jokes, smirks, facial expressions and familiarly used verbiage reveal that Kyane is close to 100% back and I feel he is mentally stronger than ever,” Hutton stated in the post.
Hutton credited this to the years Schmidt spent working toward his goals and maintaining his strength for football.
“Kyane has a determination and conviction that I know he never imagined he would use in overcoming a battle such as this, but years of training, focus and sacrifice have given him the strength he might not even have realized he had to face this situation head on,” Hutton stated.
As the football team prepares for the upcoming season, Schmidt and his family prepare for the road to recovery.
